Presentation Abstract:
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), although “allergic disorders” are not designated as a specific disease name in classical texts, their manifestations—such as sneezing, rashes, asthma, nasal congestion, and itching—can be categorized under conditions like “Wind Syndrome” (风证), “Biqiu” (鼻鼽), “Xiaochuan” (哮喘), “Urticaria” (荨麻疹/瘾疹), and “Eczema” (湿疹). External pathogenic factors (the “Six Excesses”), with Wind as the leading cause, are considered the primary external triggers. Wind is said to be the “leader of all diseases” due to its ability to attack the Lung and defensive Qi, resulting in symptoms such as itching skin and urticarial wheals—manifesting as conditions like “Wind Rash” and “Wind-induced Itching.” Wind-cold, Wind-heat, and Wind-damp combinations can give rise to different types of allergic presentations: • Allergic rhinitis is often seen as a Wind-Cold attacking the Lung pattern. • Eczema is typically related to Wind-Damp-Heat accumulation in the skin. The underlying pathogenesis usually involves dysfunction of the Lung, Spleen, and Kidney organs, along with invasion by external pathogens. Treatment principles include: • Supporting the righteous (Zheng Qi) and expelling the evil (Xie Qi) • Dispersing Wind and ventilating the Lung • Stabilizing the exterior and stopping nasal discharge Acupuncture: Primary point Hegu (LI4) is used with the “Zha Tiao” (quick insertion and flick) technique and electrical stimulation. This can be supplemented with Zusanli (ST36) and Shangxing (DU23).
